A novel investigation of Casson fluid flow over an infinite plate with constant temperature by constructing the absorbing boundary conditions

Casson fluid has been widely used in blood, honey, chocolate, and various polymer fluids, for which the investigation of its underlying flow and heat transfer mechanisms in complex environments is of vital significance. In this paper, the Casson fluid flow over an infinite moving plate with constant temperature is studied, which leads to a coupled system of the velocity and temperature fields. To treat the infinite coupled system more accurately, the artificial boundary conditions in terms of fractional derivatives are developed using the Laplace transform, which transfers the problem in the infinite domain to a model in the bounded domain. The finite difference method is applied to solve the new bounded coupled system. Furthermore, three numerical experiments are presented to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the transferred model and the numerical scheme. The influence of some important physical parameters on the velocity and temperature fields is also explored. The main findings are that the viscosity of the Casson fluid decreases with an increasing Grashof number leading to an accelerated flow, the thermal conductivity diminishes as the Prandtl number increases resulting in a weakened thermal effect within the flow, and the velocity at the fixed position decreases as the Casson parameter increases.

Relating absorbing and hard wall boundary conditions for a one-dimensional run-and-tumble particle

Abstract The connection between absorbing boundary conditions and hard walls is well established in the mathematical literature for a variety of stochastic models, including for instance the Brownian motion. In this paper we explore this duality for a different type of process which is of particular interest in physics and biology, namely the run-tumble-particle, a toy model of active particle. For a one-dimensional run-and-tumble particle subjected to an arbitrary external force, we provide a duality relation between the exit probability, i.e. the probability that the particle exits an interval from a given boundary before a certain time $t$, and the cumulative distribution of its position in the presence of hard walls at the same time $t$. We show this relation for a run-and-tumble particle in the stationary state by explicitly computing both quantities. At finite time, we provide a derivation using the Fokker-Planck equation. All the results are confirmed by numerical simulations.

Simulating time-harmonic acoustic wave effects induced by periodic holes/inclusions on surfaces

This paper introduces a localized meshless method to analyze time-harmonic acoustic wave propagation on curved surfaces with periodic holes/inclusions. In particular, the generalized finite difference method is used as a localized meshless technique to discretize the surface gradient and Laplace-Beltrami operators defined extrinsically in the governing equations. An absorbing boundary condition is introduced to reduce reflections from boundaries and accurately simulate wave propagation on unclosed surfaces with periodic inclusions. Several benchmark examples demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed method in simulating acoustic wave propagation on surfaces with diverse geometries, including complex shapes and periodic holes or inclusions.

Penalty Sponge Layers (PSL) for hyperbolic systems. General formulation, well-posedness and stability

In this work we design and analyze an alternative to the Absorbing Boundary Conditions (ABC) or Perfectly Matched Layers (PML) technique to solve symmetric first order hyperbolic systems in unbounded domains. We propose a general formulation of absorbing layers that we call Penalty Sponge Layer (PSL). Well-posedness as well as stability properties are quite simply inherited from the original problem. Such a formulation is written in terms of a set of auxiliary variables similar to those encountered in the Complex Frequency Shifted PML (CFS-PML) technique, but this time they have the role of a penalty term, hence the name PSL. This second role of penalty, ensured by stretching an artificial frequency to infinity in the vicinity of the interface, makes the layer asymptotically non-reflecting. Numerical tests are performed to compare them with Standard Sponge Layers (SSL) and PMLs, and to validate their success, even in severe situations where the latter fail (e.g., the Euler system at oblique subsonic/critical or supersonic flow and anisotropic waves).

Phase composition and numerical model of low-pressure pulse carburized layer in 15Cr14Co12Mo5Ni2W steel

Aerospace engine gear steel, 15Cr14Co12Mo5Ni2W steel, requires carburizing heat treatment to achieve operational performance. However, predicting the carbon concentration during the vacuum carburizing process poses significant challenges. This paper aims to design and establish a predictive model for the carbon concentration during the vacuum carburizing process of 15Cr14Co12Mo5Ni2W steel. Given the complex phase transformations during the vacuum carburizing process caused by the ultra-high alloy content of 15Cr14Co12Mo5Ni2W steel, vacuum short-term intense carburization and diffusion experiments were designed. Characterization methods such as XRD, scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalysis, EBSD, and FIB+TEM were used to study the microstructure, phase composition, phase constituents, and distribution of element concentrations during the vacuum carburizing process. Subsequently, a carbon concentration distribution calculation model considering carbide changes during the vacuum carburizing process of 15Cr14Co12Mo5Ni2W steel was established. Boundary conditions for carbon absorption during the intense carburization process of 15Cr14Co12Mo5Ni2W steel were proposed, and the relationship between surface carbon concentration and boundary conditions was determined through experiments. Using the method of forward calculation with least squares fitting of experimental data, the diffusion coefficient of carbon in the austenite of 15Cr14Co12Mo5Ni2W steel and the rate of carbon exchange between carbides and the matrix were derived, providing a more precise predictive tool for optimizing the vacuum carburizing process of 15Cr14Co12Mo5Ni2W steel.

Construction of the absorbing boundary condition for the flow of Oldroyd-B fluid over a semi-infinite plate with magnetic effect

As a kind of non-Newtonian fluid, the Oldroyd-B fluid has widespread applications. To study the flow characteristics deeply is of great significance. In this paper, we consider a simple model of the Oldroyd-B fluid flow over a semi-infinite plate in a magnetic field. The governing equation is formulated, and the numerical solutions are obtained using the finite difference method. To deal with the semi-infinite region, the artificial boundary method is applied to construct the absorbing boundary condition (ABC) with the (inverse) z-transform, which converts the semi-infinite region to a finite one. To test the accuracy of the numerical scheme, a numerical example by introducing the source term is presented. Graphs show the rationality of the ABC by comparing the fluid flow velocity between the direct truncated boundary condition and the ABC. The effects of the amplitude, the frequency, the relaxation time parameter, the retardation time parameter, and the magnetic field on the magnitude and the cycle of flow velocity are investigated and discussed. The main findings are that the retardation time parameter promotes the velocity of the fluid flow, while the relaxation time and magnetic field hinder the fluid flow. When the relaxation time is equal to the retardation time, the Oldroyd-B fluid can approximate the Newtonian fluid. In addition, the oscillating cycle becomes shorter for a smaller relaxation time parameter or a larger magnetic field and frequency.

A study of the non-linear properties and wave generation of the multi-layer non-hydrostatic wave model SWASH

Despite the increasing use of non-hydrostatic models in the study of wave processes in coastal regions, there is still limited understanding of the non-linear properties of the governing equations and how they improve with increased vertical resolution. In this study, the governing equations of the non-hydrostatic wave model SWASH are analysed and the linear and non-linear solutions up to third-order of all dependent variables are derived, considering one to four vertical layers. The analysis concludes that the model can achieve excellent non-linear properties with respect to the Stokes theory over a large range of water depths using only a few vertical layers. Furthermore, deriving solutions for all variables enables the formulation of improved wave generation and absorption boundary conditions for non-hydrostatic models. A well-known issue of non-linear wave models is related to the generation and propagation of spurious free waves, resulting to non-homogeneous wave fields. In this study, it is proven that by imposing the derived exact mathematical solutions of the governing equations at the model’s boundaries, the target first- and second-order wave profiles can be generated with high accuracy, while the spurious waves can be entirely eliminated.

Explicit P1 Finite Element Solution of the Maxwell-Wave Equation Coupling Problem with Absorbing b. c.

In this paper, we address the approximation of the coupling problem for the wave equation and Maxwell’s equations of electromagnetism in the time domain in terms of electric field by means of a nodal linear finite element discretization in space, combined with a classical explicit finite difference scheme for time discretization. Our study applies to a particular case where the dielectric permittivity has a constant value outside a subdomain, whose closure does not intersect the boundary of the domain where the problem is defined. Inside this subdomain, Maxwell’s equations hold. Outside this subdomain, the wave equation holds, which may correspond to Maxwell’s equations with a constant permittivity under certain conditions. We consider as a model the case of first-order absorbing boundary conditions. First-order error estimates are proven in the sense of two norms involving first-order time and space derivatives under reasonable assumptions, among which lies a CFL condition for hyperbolic equations. The theoretical estimates are validated by numerical computations, which also show that the scheme is globally of the second order in the maximum norm in time and in the least-squares norm in space.

Conditioning and spectral properties of isogeometric collocation matrices for acoustic wave problems

The conditioning and spectral properties of the mass and stiffness matrices for acoustic wave problems are here investigated when isogeometric analysis (IGA) collocation methods in space and Newmark methods in time are employed. Theoretical estimates and extensive numerical results are reported for the eigenvalues and condition numbers of the acoustic mass and stiffness matrices in the reference square domain with Dirichlet, Neumann, and absorbing boundary conditions. This study focuses in particular on the spectral dependence on the polynomial degree p, mesh size h, regularity k, of the IGA discretization and on the time step size Δt\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$\\Delta t$$\\end{document} and parameter β\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$\\beta $$\\end{document} of the Newmark method. Results on the sparsity of the matrices and the eigenvalue distribution with respect to the number of degrees of freedom d.o.f. and the number of nonzero entries nz are also reported. The results show that the spectral properties of the IGA collocation matrices are comparable with the available spectral estimates for IGA Galerkin matrices associated with the Poisson problem with Dirichlet boundary conditions, and in some cases, the IGA collocation results are better than the corresponding IGA Galerkin estimates, in particular for increasing p and maximal regularity k=p-1\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$k=p-1$$\\end{document}.

Adaptive-Coefficient Finite Difference Frequency Domain Method for Solving Time-Fractional Cattaneo Equation with Absorbing Boundary Condition

The time-fractional Cattaneo (TFC) equation is a practical tool for simulating anomalous dynamics in physical diffusive processes. The existing numerical solutions to the TFC equation generally deal with the Dirichlet boundary conditions. In this paper, we incorporate the absorbing boundary condition as a complex-frequency-shifted (CFS) perfectly matched layer (PML) into the TFC equation. Then, we develop an adaptive-coefficient (AC) finite-difference frequency-domain (FDFD) method for solving the TFC with CFS PML. The corresponding analytical solution for homogeneous TFC equation with a point source is proposed for validation. The effectiveness of the developed AC FDFD method is verified by the numerical examples of four typical TFC models, including the different orders of time-fractional derivatives for both the homogeneous model and the layered model. The numerical examples show that the developed AC FDFD method is more accurate than the traditional second-order FDFD method for solving the TFC equation with the CFS PML absorbing boundary condition, while requiring similar computational costs.

A multi-domain spectral collocation method for the Fokker–Planck equation in an infinite channel

In this paper, we propose a multi-domain spectral collocation method for partial differential equations on two-dimensional unbounded domains. Some approximation results on the composite generalized Laguerre-Legendre interpolation and quasi-orthogonal projecting are established, respectively. These results play a significant role in related spectral collocation method. As an application, a multi-domain spectral collocation scheme is provided for the Fokker–Planck equation with absorption or non-homogeneous boundary conditions. The convergence of the proposed algorithm is performed. An efficient implementation is presented. Numerical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and high accuracy of the algorithm.

A generating absorbing boundary condition for simulating wave interaction with maritime structures in current or at forward speed

The lack of suitable boundary conditions in practical surface wave simulations with maritime structures in current or at forward speed may cause energy in the computational domain to accumulate due to spurious wave reflection. The common way to prevent wave reflection is to use passive wave absorbers, such as damping zones or relaxation zones, which requires larger domains at the cost of computational effort. Our goal is to derive a local generating absorbing boundary condition (GABC) for long-crested irregular waves on top of a mean flow, using the flow to model the forward speed of a structure such as a ship. Earlier work has demonstrated that a local GABC for free surface waves has a performance similar to passive wave absorbers, but at a reduced computational effort. New in the present work is that we extend, verify and validate the GABC in the presence of a nonzero mean flow. The GABC is designed to be accurate for a range of wave components in irregular sea states, with the resulting reflection coefficients for each component lower than a chosen value, say 5%. Having used potential flow theory for its derivation means that the boundary should not be placed at the exact location where wave breaking is expected, such as very close to the structure in the domain, or in the surf zone in coastal modeling. For the application with ships in this article that does not pose a limitation. The performance is demonstrated for a range of dimensionless wave number between 0 and 6. Such a boundary condition is obtained through a rational approximation of the linear dispersion relation with a mean flow, in combination with vertical derivatives of the solution variables along the boundary. Local linearization means that the GABC incorrectly considers bound, nonlinear wave components to be freely propagating wave components. Bound components, however, tend to have smaller amplitudes and do not appear to affect performance for the considered cases. Results of simulations with regular and irregular waves, on top of flows with different magnitudes and directions, are found to agree with the theory. The main source of differences is the implementation of the second derivate in the GABC near the free surface. Simulations of a Wigley hull at forward speed in irregular waves are compared to an experiment that was conducted specifically for validating the ABC. The data of the experiment are available as open data through doi: 10.4121/21320604. The comparison between simulation and experiment demonstrates that the GABC with a mean flow can be applied not only for theoretical simulations with propagating waves, but also for more practical applications with a structure in the domain.

High-Power Terahertz Photonic Crystal Surface-Emitting Laser with High Beam Quality

The photonic crystal surface-emitting laser (PCSEL) has attracted much attention due to the advantages of a small far-field divergence angle and high output power. Here, we report a high-power terahertz (THz) photonic crystal laser with high beam quality through the optimization of the absorption boundary condition and the introduction of the symmetrically distributed electrodes. Single-mode surface emission at 3.4 THz with the maximum peak output power of 50 mW is demonstrated. Meanwhile, a high symmetric far-field pattern with C6 symmetry and a small divergence angle is achieved. In this device, the integration of the stable single-mode operation, high beam quality and high output power is realized, which may have great significance for practical applications.

A unified higher-order unsplit CFS-PML technique for solving second-order seismic equations using discontinuous Galerkin method

The absorbing boundary conditions play a key role in numerical simulations. The complex frequency-shifted perfectly matched layer (CFS-PML), one of the absorbing boundary conditions, has attracted widespread attention because it can efficiently attenuate near-grazing incident waves and evanescent waves. In practical application, the distinct boundary reflections still exist using the CFS-PML in a thin PML region. To further enhance the absorbing performance, we have developed a novel unified high-order unsplit CFS-PML technique. The high-order CFS-PML combined with the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is applied to solve the second-order seismic wave equation on an unstructured mesh. In this work, we establish a unified framework for high-order unsplit CFS-PML formulations. The classical CFS-PML is the first-order form of our proposed unsplit high-order approach. By using auxiliary variables and auxiliary ordinary differential equations (AODEs), a higher-order CFS-PML formulation can be reduced to a first-order CFS-PML formula. For an Nth-order AODE CFS-PML, it will lead to (2N-1) additional variables and (2N-1) auxiliary differential equations. Taking second- and third-order as examples, we have derived the high-order unsplit AODE CFS-PML expressions in detail. The DG method can effectively deal with complex geological structures, such as caves, cracks, faults, etc., which yields more accurate numerical solutions. We incorporate the high-order unsplit AODE CFS-PML technique into the DG method to approximate seismic wave equations. Their strengths are combined to calculate the propagating wavefield in more complex finite models and obtain better results. In addition, the stability conditions of the second- and third-order CFS-PMLs are provided. We perform the high-order unsplit CFS-PML implementation for seismic wave modeling in several models. The isotropic and anisotropic examples prove that the high-order unsplit CFS-PML enjoys better absorbing performance than the classical CFS-PML. The numerical result for the graben model certifies the feasibility and flexibility of our proposed high-order CFS-PML combined with the DG method.

Practical Aspects of Physics-Informed Neural Networks Applied to Solve Frequency-Domain Acoustic Wave Forward Problem

Abstract Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) have been used by researchers to solve partial differential equation (PDE)-constrained problems. We evaluate PINNs to solve for frequency-domain acoustic wavefields. PINNs can solely use PDEs to define the loss function for optimization without the need for labels. Partial derivatives of PDEs are calculated by mesh-free automatic differentiations. Thus, PINNs are free of numerical dispersion artifacts. It has been applied to the scattered acoustic wave equation, which relied on boundary conditions (BCs) provided by the background analytical wavefield. For a more direct implementation, we solve the nonscattered acoustic wave equation, avoiding limitations related to relying on the background homogeneous medium for BCs. Experiments support our following insights. Although solving time-domain wave equations using PINNs does not require absorbing boundary conditions (ABCs), ABCs are required to ensure a unique solution for PINNs that solve frequency-domain wave equations, because the single-frequency wavefield is not localized and contains wavefield information over the full domain. However, it is not trivial to include the ABC in the PINN implementation, so we develop an adaptive amplitude-scaled and phase-shifted sine activation function, which performs better than the previous implementations. Because there are only two outputs for the fully connected neural network (FCNN), we validate a linearly shrinking FCNN that can achieve a comparable and even better accuracy with a cheaper computational cost. However, there is a spectral bias problem, that is, PINNs learn low-frequency wavefields far more easily than higher frequencies, and the accuracy of higher frequency wavefields is often poor. Because the shapes of multifrequency wavefields are similar, we initialize the FCNN for higher frequency wavefields by that of the lower frequencies, partly mitigating the spectral bias problem. We further incorporate multiscale positional encoding to alleviate the spectral bias problem. We share our codes, data, and results via a public repository.

Dynamic reliability analysis of Aerial Building Machine under extreme wind loads using improved QBDC-based active learning

Aerial building machine (ABM) is a new comprehensive construction equipment used for the construction of high-rise buildings, and the research of its wind-induced response is essential for structural safety. However, the traditional reliability estimation for complex structures is generally computationally expensive. This study proposes a novel and time-saving active learning (AL) approach to predict the structural time-variant response and calculate the reliability under extreme wind loads based on improved Query-by-Dropout-Committee (QBDC), Deep Learning (DL) and Probability Density Evolution Method (PDEM). To establish an effective training set, the load sample pool from the turbulent wind field is constructed by the number theory method (NTM). Then a DL surrogate model, aimed to simulate the excitation-response relationship of the structure, is well-trained from data calculated by the Finite Element Method (FEM) under the workflow of the improved QBDC-based AL approach. Lastly, the structural responses predicted by the surrogate model are used to solve the Generalized Density Evolution Equation (GDEE) to obtain the Probability Density Function (PDF) of the structural response. The dynamic reliability can be gained using absorbing boundary condition. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach, an ABM in China is taken as a case study. It is found that (1) The external trusses of the platform are weak positions under the horizontal wind loads. It is suggested to append the longitudinal (windward direction) trusses to reduce the local stress and deformation. (2) Under turbulent wind loads with the average speed of 40 m/s, the maximum structural response of the ABM will exceed the threshold value and the reliability is 0.932. (3) The reliability calculation error derived by the proposed approach and the traditional PDEM is within 0.5 % in this study, while the computational efficiency of the AL approach is 77.08 % higher than that of the traditional PDEM. The novelty lies in the proposed active learning approach that can easily obtain the stochastic response and dynamic reliability of the ABM, where the analysis workflow not only has a low computational cost but also maintains a high calculation accuracy.

Topanga: A kinetic ion plasma code for large-scale ionospheric simulations on magnetohydrodynamic timescales

Topanga is a kinetic ion code developed for simulating large-scale plasma phenomena in the Earth's ionosphere on magnetohydrodynamic timescales. It is a domain-decomposed parallel code that runs on high-performance computing platforms. Features of Topanga include spherical geometry for simplified boundary conditions and computational efficiency; a hybrid plasma model with inertia-less fluid electrons, kinetic ions, and an electric field specified via an Ohm's law; a Maxwell-FDTD (finite difference time domain) plasma model which retains the displacement current in Maxwell's equations and models electron currents in the ionosphere with a tensor conductivity; sponge-layer boundary conditions for absorption of electromagnetic and plasma waves incident on the domain boundaries; and a novel mixed-implicit algorithm for evolving the EM fields inside the Maxwell-FDTD region that is stable over many orders of magnitude in the electron–ion collision frequency. We verify the numerical methods used in Topanga on a pair of test problems. The first test involves modeling a three-dimensional collisionless shock using the hybrid set of equations. The second test involves modeling a spherical TEM mode in vacuum using the Maxwell-FDTD set of equations. Finally, we demonstrate how using the combined set of hybrid and Maxwell-FDTD equations to model the Starfish Prime high-altitude nuclear test recovers a “missing” EM signal on the ground that is not present when using only the hybrid set of equations. The magnitude of this signal in the simulation containing the Maxwell-FDTD region agrees well with the E3a portion of the magnetohydrodynamic electromagnetic pulse from Starfish Prime.
